From Hillary’s Harbour to Mandurah, there are quite a few options for jet ski hire in and around Perth. The crystal clear waters around Western Australia are perfect for exploring the scenic coastline, gorgeous marinas, tranquil rivers, hidden waterways, scheduled beaches and the abundance of marine life that are just waiting to play!
There is a good choice of jet ski hire that does and doesn’t require a recreational skippers ticket. This is the Western Australian version of a boat licence required to ride a jet ski unsupervised. There are tow and go jet ski hire options that require the hirer to own this marine licence.
In some situations, you can ride to Rottnest Island, however please confirm with the operator as this will depend on the specific jet ski you hire. There are also varied conditions about who can drive the jet ski and who can be a passenger, depending on insurance terms, so please also check this out before you hit the water.
Can you hire a jet ski on Perth’s Swan River?
Jet ski hire on Perth’s Swan River isn’t currently available directly, however there are ways around this.
PWCs, or Personal Water Crafts known as jet skis, are allowed in certain areas of the Swan River. The Department of Transport highlights the following:
‘PWCs are prohibited in the Swan River upstream of the Windan Bridge, upstream of Salter Point in the Canning
River and in all Swan River Marine Parks.
PWCs are permitted in all Swan and Canning Riverpark water ski areas except for the Belmont ski area.
PWCs are permitted to operate in most of the large offshore water ski areas such as Warnbro, Cockburn
Sound and Geographe Bay”.
The best way to hire a jet ski on the Swan River is to rent from one of the operators that allow you to tow the jet ski to a location of your choice. You can use a boat ramp onto the Swan River in a permitted area, and off you go! Note that Coode Street Boat Ramp is not permitted for jet ski launches. However, for this jet ski hire situation, you will need a recreational skippers ticket to be licenced to ride.
There is a dedicated jet ski launch ramp at the Narrows PWC area in South Perth, which is unique in having such an area for freestyling.
Jet Ski rentals in Perth
This is our favourite place for jet ski hire in Perth!
Located at Rockingham, hit the open sea with Jet Ski Tours Perth. Where adrenaline blast meets eco adventure, take the 1 hour or 1.5 hours Yamaha jet ski tour around the beautiful Cockburn Sound and surrounding Garden Island. Get up close and personal with marine wildlife, including many dolphins and sea lions, as your tour guide (human kind, not the marine life kind of tour guide!) highlights some of the best bits of the coastline.
If you don’t fancy a jet ski tour, you can still hire one for your own playtime. Choose from 15 mins to an hour of uninterrupted time spent blasting around a supervised, defined area within sight of the operator.
What is great about both experiences is that a recreational skippers ticket is not required. It also doesn’t matter if you are a complete newbie, as full instruction and safety briefing will be given.
Ultimate Watersports have several locations dotted around Western Australia, including Hilarys Harbour, South Perth (New!), Geraldton, Exmouth and Broome. Great packages are available such as all day passes, group bookings, kid’s parties and corporate activities. There are even memberships available for regular watersport lovers.
